چکیده

Introduction Reliable estimates indicate that corrosion of metals costs the US economy almost $300 billion per year or about 4% of the GNP. Corrosion is a pervasive problem that affects almost all sectors of the economy including transportation (bridges, automobiles, aircraft, ships, pipelines, etc.), energy (power plants, petrochemical industries etc.) and defense (naval applications, aging aircraft & weapon systems, etc.). Although the complete elimination of corrosion is virtually impossible, it is believed that a third of this cost is avoidable based on the present status of corrosion science, the state-of-the-art in industrial practice and the continual developments in associated technologies. Broader application of corrosion resistant materials, improvements in corrosion prevention practice, effective detection and repair and an investment in corrosion related research are the necessary ingredients of any program that targets minimization of corrosion related costs. Given the ubiquitous nature of corrosion, life prediction and performance assurance is vital to the cost-effective management of components and systems that encounter corrosion in service. Over conservative design and operation has been the preferred approach to reducing failures and ensuring the designed performance in corrosive environments. However, the cost penalty associated with this approach is continually directing efforts toward more effective life prediction and performance assurance.

AMPTIAC MaterialEASE 3 Reliable Materials Data: The Whys and Wherefores of Data Evaluation

Introduction The tangible products of our world are made from materials, some resulting from natural forces and others from manufacturing. Regardless of the source, the performance we expect from a product depends critically on the materials in that product. For manufactured products, the reliability of the prediction of performance is dependent on the reliability of the materials data used to ...

Time-Dependent Structural Behavior of Repaired Corroded RC Columns Located in a Marine Site

The chloride corrosion of reinforcing steel in reinforced concrete (RC) structures is a significant reason for premature deterioration and failure of RC structures in aggressive environments such as Persian Gulf region. This is one of the most important sources of engineering and economic problems in developed countries. So, the repair and maintenance of RC structures exposed to corrosive envir...

Influence of cement content on concrete performance in corrosive environments (sea water)

In this study, the effect of cement content on concrete performance in corrosive environments is investigated on concrete mixtures having the same water/cement (w/c) ratio. Three w/c ratios (0.40, 0.45 and 0.50) were used and for each w/c ratio three mixtures were prepared with cement contents 350, 400 and 450 kg/m3. The compressive strength, electrical resistivity and chloride diffusivity of t...

EIS study of epoxy paints in two different corrosive environments with a new filler: rice husk ash

In this paper, the corrosion behavior of the filled epoxy paint with the rice husk ash RHA on steel substrates in two different corrosive environments natural sea water and 2M sulfuric acid has been studied. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy EIS was used to evaluate protective properties of different organic coating systems due to the different filler composition. RHA was prepared by heati...

Reliability Evaluation of a PSC Highway Bridge Based on Resistance Capacity Degradation Due to a Corrosive Environment

This paper presents a method for evaluating the reliability of an in-service highway bridge that considers the resistance capacity loss due to various corrosive environments. To demonstrate the application of the suggested method, a pre-stressed concrete-I (PSC-I) type girder was selected as a sample bridge. An analytical procedure was developed to quantitatively evaluate the performance degrad...
